My New OurStage Contest Entry

I’m experimenting again with another contest entry. I’m curious to see how my recent song ‘Inherited Bride’ holds up in the modern rock contest category. There is a lot of great material there, so my hopes aren’t really high; it’s just another step for me to grow and learn. A contest like this with a strict system for impartial judging works a little like a focus group for me, so it’s a lot of fun! I’m including a music player for you to hear my entry on this post, and hopefully you will be inspired to participate as a judge in the contest. We’ll see how it does, and in the meantime, I’ll be continuing to try to perfect my songwriting, sound engineering, production, etc. and hopefully, something better is in store!

The Inherited Bride

post on havenyates.com

My latest song - 'Inherited Bride' is a different direction for me. It is inspired by my wife Maisey Yates' latest release, 'The Inherited Bride.' Maisey inspired me to challenge myself to write something a little different a couple of weeks ago, and with a most wonderful topic of inspiration, I did!

I'm gonna keep this post brief and just hope you enjoy and share the song below, and better yet, click the book and find out more about where you can your copy of 'The Inherited Bride,' in stores everywhere now!

Purpose Brings Inspiration

I'm excited to announce that I have entered my new revised version of my song 'Hypocrite' in the Blue Microphones Songwriting Competition. It is interesting how a concrete goal can change your perspective on a creative project. What was once a passable song, I found myself rerecording, and rerecording again, changing the drums, changing the key (I know right!?), changing some of the instrumentation, and so on.

I hope the new version is much better. Please, check out the entry and see for yourself. It can be frustrating at times, but also very rewarding, working as I do in the "home studio" with the level of recording equipment I use.

For you musicians, if you like the recording, be encouraged knowing I'm using the cheapest of cheap stuff: A Shure SM58, Xenyx502 mixer, Echo Darla card (old and outdated interface), Cakewalk Music Creator, $15 Sony in ear headphones, and some free VST plugins. For this song after mixing down, I tried the trial version of the Auto Audio Mastering System.

Listeners and readers, I really could use your help in this competition. This contest will have a listener voting period from Feb. 8th through Feb. 22nd, then the winner will be picked by the judges out of the top entries. You can listen here, and I thank you so much for your vote!

Finally, A New Song!

From havenyates.com http://www.havenyates.com/blog/?p=286

Hypocrite by havenyates

This song has been written and recorded for awhile, but I've been waiting to get it produced. It is still W.I.P. but I haven't posted for so long, I decided I may as well share it in it's rudimentary form.

The inspiration:

Happy Mask
In the Bible the term hypocrite was used for play actor. Masks were used for plays (like in that one scene in Gladiator where they made fun of the Emperor in the street skit.) So many of us wear masks to suit the group we happen to be in. When I wrote this song, I thought of masks, but also clay. Clay in God's hands = good, but becoming clay to fit the molds of those around us can be very bad. You've got to know your convictions - the places you wouldn't follow a group, no matter who they were. It's funny how many people take Christians for hypocrites, and many of us are, but Jesus - Christianity's Founder, and the final Word on what it is was the first I know of to coin the term 'hypocrite' the way we use it today. He said, "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men." Matthew 6:5

Okay, enough commentary. Please listen, enjoy, download and share. I hope to have another song up soon. And here are more links for Blipping, downloading, sharing, etc:
